Ingredient Spotlight: Ceramides

By: bmbAdmin | 26 Nov 2014

Ceramides are the main component of the outermost layer of our skin: Along with cholesterol and saturated fatty acids, ceramides create a water-impermeable, protective layer to prevent excessive water loss due to evaporation. Ceramides also act as a barrier against the entry of microorganisms.

When we are young, our bodies manufacture an ample amount of ceramides to keep our skin hydrated and healthy. But as we age, ceramide production declines and skin loses moisture, becomes thinner and less supple, and begins to wrinkle and sag.

Ceramides help protect skin

Ceramides are a crucial component in maintaining skin’s moisture barrier function – which keeps harmful organisms out and moisture in. Dry, irritated, aging, and sensitive skin often lacks ceramides. As a result, the skin’s protective barrier is compromised and becomes more susceptible to environmental factors, changes of season, and other irritants. Ceramides also support the matrix of the skin, helping to keep it firm and younger looking.

Bel Mondo’s Ultra-Hydrating Facial Sheet Mask contains both Ceramide Gel to help hold the skin’s cells together in a firm, smooth structure, and help maintain moisture retention ability; and Bio-Ceramidyl to improve skin’s cutaneous barrier function and increases water-holding capacity.
